Why Is My AC Running But Not Cooling The House?

An AC that runs but doesn’t cool usually points to airflow blockage, a dirty outdoor coil, low refrigerant from a leak, or a thermostat/control problem. Most often, a clogged filter or matted condenser coil chokes heat removal so the system runs nonstop without dropping the temperature. Continuing to run it this way can strain the compressor and drive up bills. Our technicians frequently see this in coastal homes we service around Melbourne, where salt and debris load up coils faster than expected. A quick field tell: if the outdoor coil is packed with lint or salt, the top fan may spin but the side panels feel very hot to the touch.

Before you call, check these simple items:

  • Set thermostat to Cool, fan Auto, and lower the setpoint 3–5 degrees.
  • Replace a dirty air filter and open closed supply/return vents.
  • Gently clear leaves from the outdoor unit; keep 2–3 feet of space around it.
  • Look for water at the air handler (clogged drain/float switch) or unusually short on/off cycling.

If basic checks don’t restore cooling, turn the system off to prevent damage and schedule a professional diagnostic.
